I am often asked by young entrants to the profession—particularly first-generation lawyers—where they should begin: should they start directly in the higher courts, or at the lowest rung of the judicial hierarchy?

My answer is the same, whether one is a first-generation lawyer or comes from a long legal lineage. One should begin in the district courts. The experience gained there is not merely useful—it is foundational. Equally important is the opportunity to build professional relationships at the district level. It is the lawyers practicing there who will, in due course, send cases to you, when you move to the higher courts.

I was a third-generation lawyer, yet I spent two years in the lower courts—one year at Banda and another at Kanpur. Those years proved invaluable. They gave me first-hand understanding of trial work and court craft at the grassroots level. More importantly, they earned me goodwill and friendships that endured throughout my professional life.

One may aspire to argue in constitutional courts, but one must first learn how justice is administered at its base. The strength of a building lies in its foundation; so does the strength of a lawyer.
