Important Point About Communication

Summary: In this post, I talk about an important point regarding improving communication.

This post uses an important quote from Shakespeare's play Hamlet to explain the point. This play is based on a Danish legend and is set on Kronborg castle in Helsingør, Denmark. This year my son was in Denmark on the Fulbright Scholarship. This picture of the castle was taken during our visit to Denmark in the summers.

Polonius is a character in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet (Act 2, Scene 2). He is long-winded but ironically says an important point about communication that ‘Brevity is the soul of wit’. It means that the essence of cleverness or intelligence is being concise and to the point. Expressing ideas clearly and briefly is the best way to communicate.

    • What is said in ten pages, try to say in one page:

    • What is said in one page, try to say in one paragraph; and 

    • What is said in one paragraph, try to say in one line. 

This is easier said than done. It is difficult, requires practice and repeated revisions. You can never be concise and to the point, unless your understanding on the subject is clear. 

Conclusion: Be brief, be short, be to the point.
