Last but not the least—and perhaps the most important advice in life is, to have fun. It is the spice of life. Once you enter the legal world—or any other profession—time is the only thing that you will always lack. This phase of life is precious. Use it to develop good habits, shape your personality, build friendships, contacts, and networks. These will help you throughout your life.

Do not worry about success in the legal profession. Law is perhaps the only profession where, if you succeed, you become Motilal Nehru; if you fail, you become Jawaharlal Nehru; and if you are somewhere in between, you become a retired judge—like me.

From L to R: Anil Trivedi, Niraj Kumar and myself - Lasting University days friendship - Allahabad Railway station platform 1970

Jokes apart, my professional life has come full circle. I began as a lawyer, then became a judge and now again am a lawyer. My early years coincided with the Internal Emergency, during which I handled several cases pro bono. That period taught me a lasting lesson: money is not everything in life.

Today, there is no dearth of money in arbitration, and I can appear in all High Courts except Allahabad and Chhattisgarh. Yet, I consciously step back. Perhaps I now understand Kabir’s words better:

गोधन, गजधन, बाजिधन और रतन धन खान।
जब आवे संतोष धन, सब धन धूरि समान॥

My father often said that in his next life, he would choose to be a lawyer again. I once wanted to be a scientist—but now, I am no longer so certain.

Wishing all of you happiness and a meaningful life and soon we will go on another journey on this blog.
