This is how New York Times titled its tribute to Louis Nizer's (February 6, 1902 – November 10, 1994) on his death. During second half of the last century, he was the leading American trial court lawyer. He was an authority on contract, copyright, libel, divorce, plagiarism, antitrust, and on other kinds of law involving the entertainment world; though this was not the only reason why he attracted the famous.
Universal shop was managed by a person, who was of my father’s age. He knew my love for the books. On my one of the visits to the shop, in the late 1970s, he recommended a new book ‘Reflections Without Mirrors’. According to him, it was by a famous lawyer Louis Nizer and I should read it. I purchased the book and enjoyed reading it. In times to come, I read three more interesting books written by Nizer: ‘My Life in Court’, ‘Catspaw’ and ‘The Implosion Conspiracy’.
The first two are about cases, where Nizer was involved. In Catspaw, he discusses one of his case. There is another book ‘The Jury Returns’ written by him. It is about the cases that he conducted but I could not lay my hands on it.
His books are full of courtroom drama and tension. His book 'My Life in Court' was on The Times's best-seller list for 72 weeks. One of the cases in this book, is about the libel case of the author Quentin Reynolds that he had won. This also served as the basis of the 1963 Broadway play 'A Case of Libel'.
I knew about Quentin Reynolds as he has written ‘Courtroom’ the biography of Leibowitz, who was the most famous American trial court lawyer in the first half of the last century. It is the finest legal biography ever written. I had read it when I was a law student and was aware of him.
‘The Implosion Conspiracy’ is the only book about a case, where Nizer was not involved.
This book is story of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg (the Rosenberg couple), who were sentenced to death for leaking nuclear secrets to USSR during second world war. Nizer researched about the Rosenberg case and its result is the book 'The Implosion Conspiracy'. It is interesting and gripping. It is worth every penny that it costs. Nizer strongly identified with his clients' interests. He once wrote ‘A Lawyer's Prayer’. It started as,
‘I would pray, O Lord, never to diminish my passion for a client's cause, for from it springs the flame which leaps across the jury box and sets fire to the conviction of the jurors.’
He was a master at preparing and presenting legal arguments. He never memorized but planned his case and submissions meticulously, during long hours at his office. No wonder he was so successful.
