WORKING OF OUR CONSTITUTION: SOME EXPERIENCES

Two Classic Books on Our Constitution।। ।। ।। ।।

Granville Austin (1927 – 6 July 2014) was an American historian. He earned a doctorate in Modern Indian History from Oxford University. He has written some books and two of them are on our Constitution. In recognition of his work, he was awarded Padma Shri in 2011.

His first book, ‘The Indian Constitution: Cornerstone of a Nation (1966)’, documents framing of our Constitution. It has been translated into Hindi and other Indian languages.

His second book, ‘Working A Democratic Constitution: The Indian Experience (1999)’ is history of our Constitution from 1950 to 1985 captured through important constitutional cases.

Both of them are classic; worth their money; and time for reading them.

The title of this series is inspired by his second book. But unlike the book, it is in the reverse order. It starts with the last constitutional case, in which I was involved before accepting judgeship namely Kalyan Singh Case. It created history.
